Choose Another Comic
Launched: 6th June 1970
Ended: 15th June 1974
Merged into: Buster
Annuals Released: 1972 - 1986
My resources: The 1979, 1980 and 1984 Annuals
The characters that made it to Buster: Wally's Weirdies, Football Madd,
The Spectre Inspector, Val's Vanishing
Cream, Ivor Lott & Tony Broke, Chalky, Tomboy and Fiends & Neighbours. Gus the Gorilla transfered to Gus's
Gags.
The Best of the Rest:
Whoever makes the decisions on comic transfers should be shot for this one. Gus the
Gorilla being demoted to a jokes page is a major crime as his strip was really
entertaining. There's a great one in the 1979 annual where he "borrows" the exit sign
to a maze and wanders around inside. The people in the maze think they've found the
exit, but when they get to the sign Gus is holding it saying "Excuse me, do you know
who this belongs to?" Simple - but very funny.
Other strips from this comic were
Jasper the Grasper - who looked a little like Boy Butler's Jasper, he was a
skinflint who would have made Scrooge proud
Hire a Horror - It was Cor!!'s answer to Rent-a-Ghost but this time it always
backfired
Nightmare - The ghost horse
Teacher's Pet - She would do anything to help teach, but again, it wouldn't ever go
right
Jelly Baby - The Stretchiest baby in the world
The Gasworks Gang - The Bash Street Kids of Fleetway
Young Macdonald and his Farm - Intelligent Andy Macdonald and his whole host of
gadgets and gizmo's
Donovan's Dad - he's incredibly strong, and a little bit dim too.
The Award for Most Promising Strip:
A great starting block for Chalky who found much fame in Buster. Tomboy was
incredibly underated too, despite making the move. But my favourite strip was The
Gasworks Gang. Boss, Tub, Dozy, Nosey and Brains vs Teacher. A fantastic strip and
top marks to Frank McDiarmid who richly deserved a better place for that strip.
The Award for the Most Disappointing Strip:
He looks like he's on drugs. Possibly the only way to describe Benny Bendo. His gaze
could bend anything, but that same gaze gave him a kind of crazy look. I wouldn't
want to be near him when he got angry! In certain strips he also came across as a bit
of a smart a*se, it would have been nice to see him get his comeuppance.
